Rutgers Expert on Violent Extremism in the US

John D. Cohen, Distinguished Professor of Professional Practice in Criminal Justice and Policy Advisor to the Police Institute, was recently interviewed about the challenges facing law enforcement today, including mass casualty incidents, ideological extremism, and the evolving role of the internet and social media. Cohen says that there has been an increase in mass casualty attacks in the US committed by people who are motivated by extreme ideological views.  He also discusses how social media and the internet have provided a way for individuals to self-radicalize and to aid different extremist groups to become connected with one another when previously separated by geography.

Cohen notes that ongoing work at Rutgers University aims to help law enforcement target these issues. Working together with mental health professionals, faith leaders and community leaders, law enforcement can better understand violent extremism and collaborate to develop local, community based prevention models to prevent and respond to this growing threat.
